Comfortable Chaos

Another weekend, another story. So goes our summer.

This weekend we had 'doubler' picnics. One with the E family, one with the K Crew. Each with their own wonderful stories to share.

Saturday, after running like crazy from soccer to t-ball (with an hour long break in the middle where we went to the grocery store, then got trapped in the parking lot for 20 minutes) we had barely enough time to throw together a sweet little dessert for the E fam picnic. Just a simple cheesecake, a treat my SIL said we could take our time making for her b-day picnic.

Cheesecake in hand, we left the house an hour late for the party. All of us E's, including the dog, packed in our SUV. Halfway to their house, Lucy's stroller fell on the dog. He got spooked, jumped into the back seat (where there was no room on the bench), and landed safely in the cheesecake.

So we arrived over an hour late, with an inedible cheesecake, a mess of a car, and a great story to share.

The rest of the day was perfect. The kids swam, we adults sipped some drinks and had a cornhole tourney. We enjoyed a perfect meal, some birthday cake, and loads of great conversation. It was lovely. (Only I forgot my camera. Remembered the dog, forgot the camera. Rats.)

Sunday we geared up for the annual German picnic. A K family fave, we all look forward to the grilling, Warsteiner, and water balloon toss.

Turbo, along side Harry, Victor, & Ralph arrived early to grill the meat and test the beer. The boys tagged along this year to start to learn the ropes. They were essential in running little errands, cooling the grill, and distributing ice. Soon enough they will earn their way to the grill like the big guys.

The rest of us showed up around lunch time, including some cousins we have not seen since my wedding several years ago. It was so nice to see them, catch up, and plan an even bigger K event (Germanfest) in the upcoming weeks.

After lunch and dessert, we had the much anticipated balloon toss. We paired off quickly: Turbo & Katie, Megan & Rex, Me & Harry, Lisa & Patti, Ralph & Nate, Linda & Lucy (ok, so they didn't play, next year for sure). Our competitive nature comes out very quickly in this heated game. We go all out, determined to win the sugary prize. (And no, we are not the only people involved in this, we're just the best...)

This is how it went down. Lisa & Patti flopped about the same time as Megan & Rex. Much later then you would have guessed, and with little evidence of the filled balloons on them, though Lisa did soak some unsuspecting busty lady in a white tank top. (Men everywhere were thanking my mom all afternoon.) Turbo doused Katie, literally head to toe, the same time Harry scraped his knee trying to catch an awful final throw from me. (Katie is smart by the way, so she wore black.) Ralph & Nate went on to win huge bags of jelly beans and the most coveted prize, a photo in the German club newspaper and bragging rights. Sweet K fam victory, again. (Of course, we then have our own balloon fight, we pride ourselves on being the first to grab the leftovers.)

Another perfect day joking, sipping from the Steins, kicking back and enjoying time with family. Really, life doesn't get much better than that.
